Materials to Avoid with a CO2 Laser Engraver

A CO2 laser engraver can process a wide range of non-metal materials, including wood, acrylic, leather, fabric, and paper.

However, not every material is suitable for laser engraving or cutting. Some materials can release corrosive or toxic fumes, leave excessive residue, or even damage important machine components.

Before starting a new project, always confirm that the material is laser-safe.

Here are several materials you should avoid or use only with professional guidance.

1. PVC and Vinyl

PVC and vinyl are among the most important materials to avoid. When heated by a laser, they can release chlorine-containing fumes that are corrosive to metal and optical components.

These fumes may damage mirrors, lenses, and other parts inside the machine. PVC flooring, vinyl sheets, and similar products should therefore not be processed with a CO2 laser engraving machine.

2. Unknown Plastics

Not all plastics behave the same way under a CO2 laser. Some may contain additives or chemical compounds that produce hazardous fumes when heated.

If you cannot identify the exact type or composition of a plastic, avoid processing it until you have confirmed that it is suitable for laser use. Never assume that a plastic is safe simply because it looks similar to acrylic.

3. ABS Plastic

ABS can melt and produce unpleasant fumes during laser processing. It may also leave melted residue on the work surface and produce inconsistent results.

For projects involving plastic parts, use materials specifically recommended for laser engraving, such as laser-compatible acrylic, rather than experimenting with unidentified ABS products.

4. Fiberglass

Fiberglass is made from glass fibers combined with resin. While the glass itself is not the main concern, the resin can produce irritating or potentially hazardous fumes when exposed to a laser.

The material can also create difficult-to-remove residue. For these reasons, fiberglass is generally not a good choice for standard laser engraving applications.

5. Carbon Fiber Composites

Carbon‑fiber items usually contain epoxy or other resins. Laser processing releases harmful fumes, heavy smoke and residues from these resins.

Before laser‑cutting composites, review manufacturer material specs and confirm the material is laser‑tested.

Risks of unsafe materials to your machine

Poor engraving is not the only issue. Corrosive fumes damage optics and metal components; heavy smoke and residue contaminate mirrors, lenses and work surfaces.

For a CO2 laser engraver, proper ventilation and regular cleaning are also important. A clean optical path helps maintain consistent laser performance and reduces unnecessary wear on machine components.

Check the Material Before Engraving

Before using a new material, follow three simple steps:

1. Identify the material and check its composition.
2. Confirm that it is laser-safe through the manufacturer's information.
3. Test a small sample before starting a larger project.

Choosing the right material is one of the easiest ways to protect your equipment and achieve reliable results. With suitable materials, a CO2 laser engraving machine can deliver clean, consistent engraving while helping extend the service life of your machine.
